Region & excursions

At the foot of Göttweig Abbey

A visit to the abbey, a walk through the wine country or a trip to Krems: around Landgasthof Schickh, you can combine many experiences.

Our establishment is in Klein-Wien, part of Furth bei Göttweig, directly below the abbey hill. Here you will find Austrian cuisine and a place to stop for a meal – before or after exploring the region.

Göttweig Abbey: culture with far-reaching views

High above the countryside rises Göttweig Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. The Baroque complex, the abbey church and the museum in the Imperial Wing make the monastery a special destination for a day out. The views over the Danube valley and the surrounding countryside are an added highlight.

Take time to enjoy the architecture, history and views. Afterwards, you can combine your visit with a stop at our establishment in Klein-Wien. The latest information on visits and guided tours can be found at Göttweig Abbey.

On foot around Göttweig and Klein-Wien

The surrounding area is easy to get to know on foot. The Furth–Paudorf section of the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail connects Furth, Göttweig Abbey and Klein-Wien. Along the way, you will encounter wine country, wooded hillsides and historic villages.

The Church of St Blasien with its mountain cemetery is also part of Klein-Wien. If you do not want to walk a whole stage, you can choose a single section and combine the outing with a meal at the country inn.

Wine country around Furth

Viticulture shapes the landscape around Göttweig Mountain. Here in the southern Kremstal, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are among the characteristic grape varieties. A walk through the surrounding area continually reveals new views of the vineyards, the abbey and the landscape along the Danube.

You can also discover the region at the table: alongside our Austrian cuisine, we offer a selection of regional white wines.

Discover Krems and Stein

For another outing, the historic districts of Krems and Stein are ideal. Lanes, squares and old town houses invite you to take a stroll through the town.

Anyone wishing to discover art will find, among other things, the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, Kunsthalle Krems and the Karikaturmuseum along the Art Mile. This means you can also spend a day in the region visiting museums.

Afterwards: stop by Schickh

After your visit to the abbey, hike or stroll through the town, we look forward to welcoming you to Landgasthof Schickh. Our menu features traditional Austrian cuisine and Arctic char from local waters. In fine weather, enjoy your meal in the garden under the chestnut trees; in the cooler months, the conservatory and cosy parlour are available.
